Albert Williams Weems, Jr. Retired Insurance Agent Services for Albert Williams Weems, Jr. will be held Friday, November 6, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with Reverends Edward O'Conner, Brian Ponder, and Harriet Simmons officiating. Robert Barham Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Weems, age 88, of Meridian, died Monday, November 2, 2015 at Anderson Hospital. The son of Albert Williams Weems, Sr. and Sarah Johnston Weems, Mr. Weems was born in Meridian, MS on March 14, 1927. He attended Meridian Public Schools, graduating from Meridian High School, and was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, class of 1948A. Mr. Weems served in the United States Navy aboard a destroyer, USS Warrington, from 1947 until 1949 after which time he returned as a Naval Reservist to Meridian and joined the general insurance agency owned by his father. He served as Commanding Officer of a Naval Reserve Electronics Unit in Meridian and then as Commanding Officer of a Naval Reserve Surface Unit in Laurel. He was recalled to active duty in early 1951 during the Korean Conflict and assisted in in recommissioning a destroyer, USS Hale, in Long Beach, CA on which he served in various theaters of operation, including the Mediterranean with the Sixth Fleet. Mr. Weems was released from active duty in early 1953 and returned to Meridian to rejoin the Weems Insurance Agency, which through various mergers and acquisitions became Weems, Randall and Christian Agency. He retired from this agency and the insurance business in 1997. Long active in business, charity and church affairs, Mr. Weems served at various times as President of the Mississippi Association of Insurance Agents, Campaign Chairman and President of the United Way, and Vestryman and Senior Warden of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Meridian. He served for many years as President of Wanita Fishing Club and Manufacturing Company. Mr. Weems enjoyed many avocations, including woodworking (numerous pieces at church, his home, and elsewhere), computer programming (insurance agency and church used his programs for a time), sailing, theater (many musicals and plays at Meridian Little Theater and Meridian Community College - best known as "Henry Higgins"), singing (church choir, Community Chorus, Meridian Barbershop Chorus), handball, racket ball and tennis. Survivors include his wife, Mary Donald Weems of Meridian, daughter, Sarah Anne Weems Johnson of Meridian, daughter, Perrin Weems Burchfield, of Meridian, brother Sterling Johnston Weems, of St. Petersburg, FL, grandchildren, Clair Palmore Johnson of Atlanta, GA, Cameron Wade Burchfield, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Weems, Sr. and his younger brother, William Saffold Weems. Family and friends may sign the online guestbook at robertbarhamffh.com.
