A.R. "Smitty" Smith

March 9, 1926 — March 8, 2018

Funeral services for Mr. A.R. “Smitty” Smith will be held Monday, March 12, 2018, at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home at 2:30pm, with Father Jose Sanchez officiating. Burial will follow at Saint Patrick’s Cemetery. Robert Barham Family Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

A.R. “Smitty” Smith passed away on March 8, one day before his 92nd birthday.

Mr. Smith was born March 9, 1926 in Fouke, Arkansas, to Althea Stephens and Lonnie Smith.  At 18, he joined the U.S Navy. He married Gloria M. Isabell in 1947. They had 6 children.

After leaving the Navy, he moved his family to Freeport, Grand Bahama, where he became the Director of Air Traffic Control.

Smitty loved to spearfish for lobster with his son Gary Smith. He also loved to invest in real estate.

Smitty was a tasteful dresser. He raised his family in beautiful homes, rather than Navy housing. He enjoyed eating a squirrel that he killed as much as pheasant under glass in the First-Class section of a jet.

Smitty is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 70 years, Gloria, daughters, Carole R. Smith, Linda K. Smith, Brenda F. Copeland, Pamela G. Dowden, as well as his sister Ruth and brother Gene.

He was preceded in death by his son, Gary, a daughter, Deborah Smith and a grandson, Shaughn Smith.

Pallbearers will be the Knights of Columbus.

Visitation will be held Monday, March 12, 2018, from 12:30-2:30pm at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home.
