If a single word could be used to describe the life of Barbara Luther Mayo, it would be service. As the wife of a minister, a beloved mother, grandmother, and nurse she lived to serve others with love. To her children she was Mom, to her grandchildren she was Nana, to her nieces and nephews she was Aunt Barbara, and to many others she was lovingly called Mama Mayo.

Barbara was born in Louisville, Mississippi on November 24,1937 and raised in Meridian. Her journey of Christian service led her from Elkhart, Indiana to locations across north and central Mississippi including Philadelphia, Ingomar, Ripley, Weir, West Point, and Meridian. Along the way as a pastor's wife and nurse her legacy of quiet kindness and caring was experienced by countless people. Even after retirement, it was not uncommon for Miss Barbara to be recognized and acknowledged for the excellent care she had provided to a patient.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the Reverend Clarence Mayo, Jr. of Detroit, Michigan; and parents, Beryl Eaves Luther of Louisville and James William Luther, Jr. of Suqualena.

Mrs. Mayo is survived by her children, Kristi Mayo Hodges of Meridian and Stephen Mark Mayo (Darla); her dearly loved grandchildren, Stephen Hunter Mayo (Emily) of Warrensburg, Missouri, Olivia Grace Mayo of Oxford, Zoe Clare Hodges of Meridian; as well as two great grandchildren, Archer Mayo and Esme Mayo of Warrensburg, Missouri. She is also survived by her brothers, Jim Luther (Annette) of Biloxi and Jerald Luther (Cindy) of Meridian; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Murphy Creek Baptist Church Mission Fund, 5420 Bond Road, Louisville, MS 39339.
