Curtis Vaughn
Funeral services for Curtis Vaughn will be held Monday, April 21, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home Chapel with Reverends W.D. Piggott and Paul Trosiper officiating. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery with Robert Barham Family Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Vaughn, age 96, of Meridian, passed away Friday, April 18, 2014 at his residence.
Curtis was born in Preston, MS on December 15, 1917. His early childhood was spent in Kemper County and Noxubee County. He was baptized in the Sucarnochee Creek. He moved to Lauderdale County just before enlisting in the U.S. Army for WWII. He served in Patton's 3 rd Army 275 th Ordinance Division. He participated in the Invasion of Normandy and landed on Utah Beach and moved the next day to Omaha Beach. Curtis was in the Battle of the Bulge, the Rhineland, Northern France, Ardennes, and Central Europe.
After returning from the service he met the love of his life of 52 years, Doris. He was an active member of his church serving as a Sunday school teacher and deacon. He worked hard and wasn't afraid to try things he wasn't accomplished in. He loved to ride the waves of the beach, camp, and fish in the mountains, and was a self taught artist. He was an auto mechanic by trade and retired from the Maintenance Department at NAS Meridian.
Survivors include his daughters, Betty and Dan Heman of Clifton, TX, Linda and Jay Vinson of Meridian, MS; sons, Paul and Cindy Vaughn of Collierville, TN and Danny Vaughn of Meridian, MS; granddaughters, Aimee and James Harper of Lake Dallas, TX, Dareth Vinson of Atlanta, GA. Jessica Vinson of Memphis, TN, Rachel and Joni Vaughn of Nashville, TN; great-granddaughters, Jaimee, Madison and Reagan Harper of Lake Dallas, TX; and three special caregivers, Jean Luckett, Martha Cullum, and Keda.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris McDonald Vaughn; grandson, Jayson Vinson ; mother and father, J.R. and Minnie Eaves Vaughn; sisters, Lettie Higginbotham, Lillie Mae Vaughn, Alline Vaughn, Ann Crosby, Willie B. Lee; brother, Prentis, Mertis, and twin brother, Herman Vaughn.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Jayson Vinson Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 249, University, MS 38677.
Pallbearers will be Ray Vaughn, Kelly Vaughn, Austin Bishop, David Gressett, Tommy McDonald, and Victor Threatt.
