Dana G. Carson, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on October 2, 2026, at the age of 78.
Dana was born on December 11, 1947. She was a graduate of Hickory High School in Hickory, Mississippi; East Central Community College; and The University of Mississippi. While attending East Central Community College, Dana proudly served as a Fire Baton Majorette in The Warrior Marching Band, an experience that was a memorable part of her college years.
Dana dedicated much of her professional life to serving others through her work with the Mississippi Department of Health, from which she later retired. Following her retirement, she continued to stay active and became involved in the family business, Griffis Motors in Philadelphia, Mississippi.
Those who knew Dana will remember her for her warm heart, generous spirit, and love of family. She enjoyed cooking and baking, growing plants, cross-stitching, bowling, and especially visiting new places. She particularly enjoyed playing canasta with her dear friends, creating many cherished memories along the way.
Her faith was an important part of her life. Dana was a longtime member of Highland Baptist Church, where she served in the nursery for more than 30 years. She also lovingly served many meals to her church family over the years, including meals associated with the Singing Christmas Tree, an event she especially cherished. Her years of service reflected her generous spirit and love for her church and community.
Dana was preceded in death by her parents, William Harrison “Pat” Griffis and Jean Willis Griffis; her sister, Carol Alice Brown; and her brother-in-law, Huff Brown.
She is survived by her brother, William A. “Bill” Griffis of Philadelphia, Mississippi; her children, Laura Baucum of Katy, Texas; Cade Carson of Madison, Mississippi; and Jennifer Settlemires (Steve) of Philadelphia, Mississippi; her grandchildren, Madison Stephens (Zach), Carson Settlemires, Cale Carson, Cane Carson, Briley Carson, and Brianne Baucum; her great-granddaughter, Caroline Stephens; and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Dana leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, family, and service. Her kindness, generosity, and devotion to those she loved will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Pallbearers will be Wright Griffis, Addison Griffis, Zach Hodges, Alain Kabore, Tim Corbit, and Winnie Moore. Honorary Pallbearers will be Donnie Mathis, Donnie Smith, Al Posey, Duffee Williams, Andy Hodges, Rick Snowden, and Quinn Carlisle.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Highland Baptist Church (HBC) to support chairs for the kitchen and the Youth/Children’s Program.
