Dorothy Nell Covington Services for Dorothy Nell (Dot) Covington will be held Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at 11:00 at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Dr. Reid Whittington and Reverend Drew Dabbs officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Miss Covington, 82, of Meridian died Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Golden Living Center, Meridian. She was born on November 26, 1929 in Bailey and was the tenth child of Thomas Linton Covington and Ruby Mae Gibson Covington. Dorothy's mother died on January 22, 1930. Because her father had eight children at home (one daughter had died), she was reared by her grandmother, Jensie Gunn Covington. Her uncle, J.W. Covington, and her aunt, Zelda Covington Terry, took over this responsibility when her grandmother died in 1944. Dorothy grew up in Bailey and graduated from Ponta High School in 1948. She then attended Mid-South Business College and became a secretary. She worked for several different employers including McCoy Insurance, Southeast High School, and Anderson's Hospital. She was also the homemaker for her uncle, J.W. Covington, with whom she shared a home. Miss Covington was a member of Prospect Presbyterian Church. She served several years as a youth sponsor, elder, Clerk of Session, and various positions with Presbyterian Women. She was honored in 2005 with a plaque denoting 26 years of service as the Clerk of Session. Her work with Presbyterian Women included service on Presbytery Committees and Synod Committees, as well. She traveled to other states with this work including Wisconsin, Indiana, California, and Georgia. A serious illness in 2004 ended some of this active service, but she was still trying to assist with writing the church history until the time of her death. Survivors include her sisters, Hazel C. Chaney of Kansas City, MO, Mary C. Chaney of Ocean Springs, Clydine C. White of Monroe, LA, Patsy C. Flowers and her husband Dewaine of Philadelphia; her brothers, Willard Covington of Dermott, AR, Tommy Covington and his wife Glenda of Natchitoches, LA; her nephews, Mel Covington, Greg Snowden, Ronald Walker, Russ Covington, Jimmy Stephens, John Chaney, Steve Chaney, Larry White and Clyde White; her nieces, Gail Hasson, Gloria Hilliard, Linda Howard, Cheryl Climer, June Mitchell, Jean Middleton, Joy Lynn Cannon, Judith Covington, and Tammy Covington; and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. This clan still holds a family reunion every year. Special extended family include her main caregiver and cousin, Phyllis T. Jones; other cousins, Rachel Covington; Doug Terry and his wife Kathy; Keith, Mandy, Mason, and Anna Grace Terry; Chris, Jennifer and Caleb Terry; Trent, Angie, Abigail, and Chloe Jones; and special friend, William Walker. She also leaves her beloved cat, Prissy. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Thomas Burnett Covington and Jensie Gunn Covington, Thomas Samuel Gibson and Mary Ella Hamrick Gibson; parents, Thomas Linton Covington and Ruby Gibson Covington; special uncle, J.W. Covington; special aunt, Zelda Covington Terry; sisters, Almeta C. Snowden, Arnita Covington, Bernice C. Walker, and Clairee C. Stephens; brother, Orville Covington. She will be greatly missed by her family. She dearly loved them and tried to stay in touch with birthday cards and Christmas cards. Pallbearers will be Ronald Walker, John Chaney, Jimmy Stephens, Greg Snowden, Steve Chaney, and Doug Terry. Honorary pallbearers are the Elders of Prospect Presbyterian Church, Willard Covington, Tommy Covington, Dewaine Flowers, William Walker, Larry White, Clyde White, Russ Covington, and Mel Covington. Memorials may be made to Prospect Presbyterian Church or the charity of your choice. Family and friends may sign the online guestbook at robertbarhamffh.com. Visitation will be held Tuesday, 5-7 at the funeral home.
