Mr. Elton, 93, of Collinsville passed away peacefully at his beloved home surrounded by his kids, Saturday January 11, 2020.
Elton was born to Harvey and Gracie Lee Joyner, February 26, 1926; he was the second of seven children. Hard-work and gardening were in his blood from an early age; at just five years old, he and his older brother, raised sugar cane, and would drag it ¼ mile to their granddaddy’s mill to make syrup. A few years later he was forced to quit elementary school in order to work and take care of his family. At the age of 14 he received his driver’s license, costing him $.25. He drove his family from MS to LA which took him two days. At the age of 16 he was farming a 200 acre farm in Oak Grove, LA. On his 18 th birthday he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He trained at Ft. Hood and was then transferred to Ft. Lewis, WA; where he learned basic medical training and kept up maintenance on over 40 vehicles during WWII.
In May of 1950, Elton moved to Collinsville, MS, where he became a pillar of his community. Joyner’s Garage was where he spent his days from 1950-1984. At this service station, he would also serve as Justice Ct. Judge for District 3 for Lauderdale, Co. in the late 1970’s. He then went on to work for Lauderdale Co., at the county barn, in the 1980’s. Finally, in his later years, he was self-employed as a small business owner for over 30 years, with a passion for gardening as well. His pride and joy were his 8ft. tall tomato plants that he grew year after year. Elton helped many friends as well as strangers over the years and wouldn’t let a man in need pass by without helping them out. He will be greatly missed by his beloved family, friends, and the members of the Collinsville Community.
Mr. Elton is survived by his daughters, Cindy Montgomery (Chris), Laneece Morgan (Gus), and Wende Bruce (Lance); step-son, James Ramsey; and son-in-law, Les Moore. Eight grandchildren, Dae, Chase, Brittney, Jamie, Will, Anna, Kelsey, and Harm. Four great-grandchildren, Bryn, Jadon, Dakota, and Gunner, as well as a host of extended family and friends.
