Services for Elaine Quarles Sorrels will be held at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home for Elaine Sorrels on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Services will be conducted by Brother Franklin McLelland and Brother Heath Riggs. Burial will be in the Blackwater Baptist Church cemetery. Elaine passed away on April 4th at her home surrounded by her family members who loved her deeply. Elaine graduated from DeKalb High School with honors in 1969 where she was elected Miss DHS. She also represented DeKalb as Miss Hospitality. She graduated from EMCC where she was a member of the dance team, the Lionettes, Phi Beta Lambda, Girls' Ensemble Singing group and was chosen Most Beautiful. Elaine married the love of her life, David Sorrels in 1970 and moved to Fayetteville, N.C. and attended N.C. State University where she worked at the Fort Bragg Post Exchange and was elected one of the "Top Ten Officers Wives" at Fort Bragg. She graduated from MSU cum laude with an Elementary Education Degree in 1976, and was nominated to the MSU Hall of Fame. She is listed in Outstanding Young Women of America and was a member of and a past president of Kemper County Civic League. She was a member of Blackwater Baptist Church where she taught Bible School and was a choir director. She was a member of the Samuel Dale Chapter DAR for 28 years. She taught school for 23 years at three schools, Northeast Lauderdale, Kemper Academy, and West Lauderdale Elementary. Her goal was to make school fun where each student could learn and succeed. She encouraged everyone and was genuine, generous, kind, fair, friendly and creative. If you were on her Christmas list you were blessed! Elaine was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her family came first and she enjoyed spending time with all of them Elaine is survived by her devoted husband of 42 years whom she fell in love with when she was sixteen, David Sorrels of Dekalb. Her daughter, Natalie Gibbs and husband David of Ridgeland, MS. Her son Chip Sorrels and wife Morgan of DeKalb, MS. Her grandsons Alex and Will Gibbs of Ridgeland, MS. and Charlton Daws Sorrels of DeKalb, MS. Sisters and brothers-in-law Margaret Cade and husband Billy of DeKalb, MS. Pat Larkin and husband Kenny of Livingston, Ala. Peggy Landrum and husband Buddy of Butler, Ala., and Dottie Quarles of Meridian, MS. Her father-in-law Chuck Sorrels of DeKalb, MS. Several aunts and uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Mims and Nona Quarles, her brother Walter Lee Quarles, and her mother-in-law, Arnette Sorrels, who loved her dearly. Pallbearers will be Ted Waddell, DeWayne Hull, Bob Mackie, Billy Holloway, Bill Griffin, Bill Clay, Robert Smith, John Watson, Mickey Sanders and Larry Gibson. The family requests any memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or a special memorial fund, "Elaine's Ministry," at Blackwater Baptist Church in Daleville, MS.
