Funeral service for Ella Shelton Hughes-Spence will be held Monday, October 30, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jack Giles officiating. Burial will follow at Old Marion Cemetery with Robert Barham Family Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Hughes-Spence, age 91, of Meridian, passed away Friday, October 27, 2017 at Rush Foundation Hospital.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Marion. She last worked at Beverly Nursing Home. Ella loved going to church, cooking, gardening, and tending to her chickens and was a good shot at anything bothering her “babies.” She would tell you she was allergic to chocolate but could eat a whole box. The grandchildren that lived by her went to her house every morning for her homemade biscuits.

She is survived by her daughters, Evelyn Wilkerson, Retha Moulds (Roger), and Diane Harris; sons, Jerry Hughes (Jean) and David Hughes; grandchildren, Randy Wilkerson, Billy Hughes Jr. (Christy), Steven Hughes (Christina), Jennifer Hughes, Kenny Moulds, Michelle Davidson (Erron), Robert Harris, Deborah Jones, and twins, Douglas and Daniel (Megan) Hughes; numerous great grandchildren with a special great granddaughter, Hanna, that called her “Mammaw Granny”; and several great great grandchildren; brother, Aubrey (Mattie) Shelton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Morris Hughes; second husband, Johnny Spence; sons, Lavon and Billy Hughes; son-in-law, Rickey Wilkerson; parents, Rhodes and Eula Shelton; brothers, Cecil, David, Houston Sr., and Jasper Shelton; and sisters, Mardell Wood, Ada Stephens, Doris Robinson, Mary Sheffield, and Lois Tims.

Pallbearers will be Steven Hughes, Billy Hughes Jr., Robert Harris, Michael Shelton, Henry Shelton, and Daniel Shelton.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Randy Wilkerson and Jeremy Hughes.
