Funeral services for Emma George Atkinson will be held at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home on Monday, February 12, 2024 at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10:00-10:45 AM prior to the service. Interment will follow at Cedarlawn Cemetery, Philadelphia, MS. Robert Barham Family Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements.
Emma George Atkinson, 89, passed away at home in Meridian, MS on February 6, 2024.
Emma was a graduate of Philadelphia High School and Millsaps College. She received a master's degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and an educational specialist degree from Mississippi State University. She dedicated her life to educating children, serving as a teacher and principal beginning in West Point then in Meridian at Highland Elementary and West Hills Elementary for many years. She was a longtime member of Poplar Springs Drive United Methodist Church where she was very active in the United Methodist Women and taught Sunday School. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Meridian retired teachers' groups, and various bridge clubs. In addition to her love of family, friends, genealogy, and travel, Emma was an avid football fan, especially of the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
Survivors include nieces D'Anne Logue, Marcy Morgan, Lori McClain, and Ginny Shurlds and their families, and honorary grandchild Jamie Galaske and her family.
Emma was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Clara Davis Atkinson, sisters Clara Lynn Morgan and Barbara Walker, and honorary son, Donnie Trussell.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Poplar Springs Drive United Methodist Church, Meridian, MS.
