Gary L. Sims Funeral services for Gary L. Sims will be held Monday, August 17, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home with Dr. John Temple, Dr. Malcolm Lewis and Reverend Davey Wilkinson officiating. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Mr. Sims, age 87, of Meridian, died peacefully, with his wife and daughter by his side on Friday, August 14, 2015 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, MS, after a lengthy illness. He moved to Meridian, MS in 1956 from Cleveland, Ohio, an adventurous person, a pilot, and a world traveler. He was very patriotic and always flew his flag on appropriate days as well and wore a flag pin in his lapel. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II with the 3rd Marine Division in Guam in the South Pacific Asian Campaign and the 1st Marine Division Pacific Theater in China and was held captive for a short period of time by the Communist Chinese. He traveled back to China in 1993 with his daughter, Cynthia Sims Morton. After retiring from Civil Service - U.S. Navy with 26 years of service, he realized his life-long dream to drive the Greyhound Lines. He was signed on at the age of 63 until he had his first heart attack. He was a member of State Blvd. Baptist Church from 1957 to 2006- while there he taught boy's Sunday School Class and worked with the church bus ministry. He was a member of the Senior Singers Choir and a member of the men's Sunday School Class. Gary had been a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church since 2006 and a member of Robert McRae Sunday School Class. Gary was past president and treasurer of American Federation of Government Employees Local No. 2244, a member of Oakland Heights Masonic Lodge No. 577, Hamasa Temple and Scottish Rite Bodies, past member of Hamasa Patrol and a Colonel on the Staff of Governer Cliff Finch in 1976. In 2009 he was selected by the Honor Flight to travel to Washington, D.C. to visit the World War II Memorial as a special guest. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Barbara Jones Sims; daughter, Cynthia Sims Morton and husband Ronald, of Clinton, MS; and grandsons, Bailey Morton and Addison Morton, of Clinton, MS. He was preceded in death by his son, Gary Jonathan Sims; infant daughter, Joy LeAnn Sims; parents, Rev. Thomas A. and Evie Riche Sims; brothers, Alton W. Sims, George W.
