George loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was an Alabama Football enthusiast, being Bear Bryant’s and Nick Saban’s biggest fan. He had a rich knowledge of the history of Alabama Football that rivaled most. He was a servant of his fellow man and served in the Mississippi Army National Guard seven years from 1963 until 1970; and served with Meridian Fire Department eleven years from 1964 until 1975. He retired as a Dispatcher with D & D Transport after over 16 years. Following his retirement his will to work continued on as a delivery driver with Olde Town Cleaners; he enjoyed meeting others and visiting his customers. His favorite title was “Grandpa” to his three granddaughters, who were his pride and heart. Faith in Jesus was always at the forefront of George’s life, being saved at a young age, he always followed the Lord throughout his life. He hid scripture in his heart and quoted verses all the time; he always made sure to say “Have a blessed day” as his parting words.

George is survived by his wife of 58 years, Kathryn Bailey Powell; children, Nikki Holifield (Tommy) and Renee’ Butler (Hank); granddaughters, Claudia Rose Marie Butler, Olivia Evelyn Annette Butler, and Cassandra Catherine Holifield; siblings, David Powell (Carole) and Patricia Berry (Crist), as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
