Harvey Swearingen, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away Monday, March 24, 2025 after a courageous battle with Medullary Thyroid Cancer and Acute Myeloid Leukemia. For five years, MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, became his second home, where he fought with unwavering strength and determination.
A proud graduate of Nanih Waiya High School, Harvey was the star quarterback who led his team to victory in the Big Black Conference Championship. He carried that same spirit of leadership and perseverance into his career, beginning with Illinois Central Railroad in 1974 and later retiring from Kansas City Southern Railroad in 2010. After retirement, he and his beloved wife, Patty, alongside their children, dedicated themselves to their family businesses-The Circle S Ranch Pumpkin Patch and Circle S Fish House and Catering. Nothing brought him greater joy than witnessing children's laughter, forging lifelong friendships, and creating cherished memories with his family and community. A man of deep faith, Harvey was a member of Cuba Baptist Church.
Harvey is survived by the love of his life and wife of 37 years, Patty Shaw Swearingen; their devoted daughter, Ashley Swearingen Tew (Hunter); his children, Deanna Swearingen, Allyson Swearingen Musa (Sam), and Caleb Swearingen (Nikki); and his grandchildren, Ashton, Chandler, Jaclyn, Amera, Mia, Kaleigh, Jackson, Georgia Brooke, Alexander, Maverick, and one on the way, Kinsley. He also leaves behind three great-grandchildren; his sisters, Dean Jordan and Mikki Merritt; his brother, James Swearingen; and a host of extended family and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Herbert Swearingen; his mother, Inez Lucille Swearingen; his beloved son, Patrick Wayne Swearingen; his great-grandson, Jackson; his brothers-in-law, Jim Jordan and Gerald Merritt; and his sister-in-law, Deana Swearingen.
Harvey's legacy of love, kindness, and resilience will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His unwavering devotion to family, friends, and community will never be forgotten.
Pallbearers will be Andy Pippin, Frank Shannon, Jimmy Jordan, Jeff Jordan, Scott Merritt, David Merritt, and Mike Swearingen. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Sheffield, Mike Boland, Ronnie Shaw, Lowry Shaw, Brian McHann, Donnie Dimino, Tommy Snell, Tommy Swain, and Donnie Simmons.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:45 a.m. prior to the funeral service at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests sharing memorial contributions with Cuba Baptist Church, P.O. Box 65, Cuba, AL 36907 or M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, TX 77210.
