Helen Roberts Stubbs passed away on August 29, 2022. She was 90 years young.
"Temple" as she was affectionately known, was born in Magee, MS on October 12, 1931. She was active in the Meridian community when she was physically able. She served on several committees for "her" church, and civic organizations in the surrounding area.
Helen shared her love for flowers and home cooked meals, pies and preserves with loved ones, friends, and often strangers. She believed you could not put too many flowers in one container, especially one that sits on the altar table in front of the church congregation.
Helen and her late husband, Billy of 70 years met at Magee High School. They made their home in Jackson, MS. Prior to living in Jackson, they lived a military life in Quantico, VA, and in Washington, DC where she worked at The Pentagon.
They moved to Meridian in 1958. As a team they established Meridian's first garden center and landscape business, The Modern Garden Center. Helen continued to operate the business for more than 60 years, while continuing a passion for decorating and floral design. She inspired people, places, and spaces with her infectious spirit.
She was a lifelong member of Highland Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, and worked on several committees, as well as worked with the youth for over 25 years. Helen was instrumental in the creation, design, and construction of the Highland Baptist Living Christmas Tree for 40 years.
Rooted in family, she was a woman of great faith, as she served her Lord devotedly. "She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come." Proverbs 31:25. Of the millions of things one's mother teaches them, how to love and nurture a family is undeniably what Temple taught her son, her daughter-in-law Becky, and her grandchildren. She loved complicated tasks in the kitchen, like preserving pears and figs. She was a fantastic cook, and organizer of family gatherings. She never failed to have a warm pecan pie. Dinners in her home were unlike any other. The family would circle and hold hands (while trying not to burn the rolls) as one was awkwardly called upon to bless the meal. One would randomly call on another to pray to watch them squirm. The family would linger sometimes an hour or so to talk and hear stories from Temple. These detailed stories often took 2 servings of pie. Once the family had to have Christmas dinner catered (due to her unforeseen fall) and she was heard whispering, "We will not be doing that again," and the family never did that again.
Survivors include her loving family; son Eric Stubbs (Becky), grandsons Eric Stubbs, Jr. (Laine), Patrick Stubbs (Alex); great-grand sons, Weston Stubbs, Luke Stubbs, and Cooper Stubbs; nieces Juliegh Greer, Pat Brister, (Bill), and Lynn Breithrupt (Ray), nephews Jimmy Stubbs, (Jessie), Darryl Greer, David Bradshaw, and several great nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Roberts, an infant son born in 1959, siblings Mynell Chiti, Simmie Roberts, Sally Kemp, Reggie Roberts, Joyce Bradshaw, Katheryn Greer.
Pallbearers will be Gordon Collum, Donnie Smith, Frank Coleman, Quinn Carlisle, Donnie Mathis, Peter Lang, Dr. Paul Allen, and Bobby Dyess.
The family would like to thank the many friends and family members, doctors, nurses, and caregivers at Aldersgate (Dogwood) retirement center.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that memorials be given to Highland Baptist Church - Music Ministry 3400 27th street Meridian MS 39305.
