September 26th, 1938 – August 16th, 2019
Homer Lewis Goodin has reached the end of his journey “down that old road to home." Homer was born in 1938 to Prentiss & Marie Bateman Goodin. His childhood was spent in the tightly knit community of Gholson, MS neighboring the ancient Nanih Waiya burial mound, a time and landscape he would forever hold sacred. There he was instilled with a core set of values and skills that would define him through all stages of life: hard work, self-discipline, and family. It was also during these formative years that young Homer committed his life to Christ, and was baptized at Dry Creek Baptist Church in Kemper County.
After graduating the Nanih Waiya School, Homer migrated with his family to Meridian where he began his career with the Borden Milk Company. It was in the Queen City that he began perhaps his greatest adventure, starting the day that his sisters, Ann and Jean brought home a new friend from school, Mary Edna Whitenton, who would become his wife.
Homer and Mary Edna were married on July, 24th 1960 at Oakland Heights Baptist Church. They had two children: Carolyn Renee and Jane Marie. Homer and Mary Edna recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.
Over the next five decades, Homer developed enduring friendships through his service in the Army National Guard, Oakland Heights Masonic Lodge, Order of The Eastern Star, and memberships at Oakland Heights Baptist Church, Arrowood Baptist Church, Westwood Baptist Church, Chunky Baptist Church, Chunky Methodist Church, and Mount Vernon Baptist Church.
In 2013, Homer and Mary Edna moved to Madison, MS due to their declining health and to be closer to their children. During this time, he valiantly battled illness, and triumphed when he crossed that River Jordan to get home.
Homer is preceded in death by his parents, Prentiss and Marie, brother, Danny Lamar, and sister, Jean.
Homer is survived by his wife, Mary Edna, his daughters, Renee (John) Read and Jane Eaves, and his sister, Ann Alexander. He also leaves behind five granddaughters, eleven great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Homer passed away on Friday, August 16th at Manhattan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The family would like to thank the staff for exemplary care and compassionate service. Funeral services will be held at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home in Meridian, MS on Saturday, August 24th. Visitation begins at 10:00 am with a funeral service officiated by Brother Jim Rickles and Brother Joey Smith to follow at 11:00 am.
