Mr. Howard Allen Conaway, age 96, passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at Baptist Anderson Medical Center. Howard was born in Memphis, Tennessee to Murray and Merle Conaway on August 17, 1928, and grew up in Memphis, TN and Tupelo, MS.
He graduated from Tupelo High School in 1946 and married the love of his life, Kathleen Scruggs and they had one son, Richard Conaway. Howard and Kathleen lived in Dalewood for many years. He had a strong love for the Dalewood Community.
For many years, Howard was an independent truck driver and loved traveling across all the states. Once Howard retired from trucking, he and his longtime friend, Carolyn Barfield, co-owned and managed Lake Village restaurant at Dalewood.
Many people will remember Howard for his service and commitment as a volunteer firefighter and EMT for both the Lauderdale and Toomsuba Fire Departments. Howard had many close friends and was loved by so many. He will be dearly missed.
Howard is survived by his three grandchildren; Laura Conaway (Sarah Goodyear) of Brooklyn, NY, Tarah Conaway (Steve Hoeschele) of Newton, Massachusetts, and Brian Conaway of South Portland, ME; five great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Goodyear, Sawyer Hoeschele, Griffin Hoeschele, Cyrus Hoeschele, and Greta Hoeschele; special nephew, Mitchell Scruggs (Marisol), and special caregivers, Raymond and Melanie Mitchell.
Howard is preceded in death by his wife of 70+ years, Kathleen Conaway; son, Richard Conaway; parents, Murray and Merle Conaway, and his K-9 Companion, Roy.
Howard's timing was impeccable. We rejoice that he arrived in Heaven on time to spend Christmas with Kathleen and Richard.
