Hubert Steven "Cooper" Langford Funeral services for Hubert Steven "Cooper" Langford will be held on Friday, February 20, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home, with Reverend Steven Lockley, his grandson, and Reverend John Kramer officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Mr. Langford, 93, of Meridian passed away on February 17, 2015, at Anderson Regional Medical Center. He was born on August 15, 1921, in Conehatta, Mississippi. Mr. Langford was a member of the 456th Anti-Aircraft Battalion. He was in the hull of the USS H.G. Blasdell in June 1944. The Blasdell was carrying nearly 160 members of the 456th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion's C Battery to the Normandy coast, following the Allied invasion of the beaches on June 6. Langford was one of more than 1,000 men from thirty states who served in the 456th battalion which saw combat in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany during World War II. In the fall of 1943, the battalion reached England and was moved to France following the D-Day invasion. They provided field artillery in General George S. Patton's Third Army. Langford was awarded Five Battle Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in action. Mr. Langford worked for thirty-eight years at the Flintkote/Owens Corning Plant in Meridian. He was an avid fisherman and gardener. He loved growing roses and prize tomatoes. Mr. Langford was a member of Druid Hills United Methodist Church. He is survived by his loving wife of seventy-two years, Marcella Langford; daughters, and their spouses, Alatha and Duffee Willliams, Jo and Gerald Lockley, and Kathy and Brian Brookshire; grandchildren and spouses, Shelley and Jimmy Whittington, Hayley and Dr. Miles Shirley, Lang and Jennifer Williams, Wayne and Becky Lockley, Reverend Steven and Brenda Lockley, Dr. Brian and Mary Brookshire, and Dr. Cooper Brookshire; great-grandchildren, Claire McCraw, Sara Paige Shirley, Conner Shirley, Marci Lockley, Maylee Lockley, Clara Brookshire and Sadie Brookshire. Pallbearers will Mr. Langford's grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers will be the Friendship Sunday School Class and his longtime best friend, Larry Johnson, who was his faithful fishing partner.
