James Kenneth Joyner

Funeral services for James Kenneth Joyner will be held Wednesday, October 7, 2015, at 11:00 a.m., at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, with Reverend W.D. Pigott and Reverend Wayne Hemmingway officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with Robert Barham Family Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Joyner, 82, of Meridian, passed away Monday, October 5, at Rush Foundation Hospital. Ken was born and raised in Shucktown and was a graduate of Centerhill High School, class of 1951. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, where he proudly served for twenty-one years, retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant. He served during the Korean War, Vietnam War, the Dominican Republic Block, and the Cuban Crisis. He earned three meritorious service medals, three commendation medals, good conduct medals, and numerous service medals. Ken attended colleges and military training schools worldwide, always educating himself at his various duty stations. He was Assistant Administrator at Rush Foundation Hospital, where he retired after twenty-two years and is recognized on the Rush Wall of Fame. Ken was also a ten year hospital volunteer for the Pink Ladies. He was an active member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, where he served as a board member for thirty-five years, and was a member of the Senior Sunday School Class. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. For the last two years, he had an apartment at Aldersgate Retirement Community. He is survived by his children, Rick (Peggy) Joyner, Lynne (Jeff) Anderson, and Denise (John) Tucker; grandchildren, Lori Joyner, Elizabeth (Ronnie) Repsher, Sarah (Josh) Grabmiller, Kristopher Tucker, Will (Meagan) Anderson, Dan Anderson, Jake (Keller) Joyner, Elijah Tucker, Alex Tucker, and Abigail Tucker; great-grandchildren, Seth King, EmmaRee Grabmiller, Caroline Repsher, and Kalin Joyner; sisters, Peggy Stevens, Virginia Morgan, and Mary Etta (Earl) Miller; brother-in-law, Dick (Angela) Taylor; sisters-in-law, Louise (Bud) Kyarsgaard, Kay Sinkler, Dana (Ned) Brunick, and Betty Joyner; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-two years, Ann Karen Taylor Joyner; daughter, Karen Lee Joyner; parents, Geoffrey and Mary Lee Joyner; sister, Lorene (Albert) Herrington; brother, Reverend William Oliver Joyner.
