James Gregory "Gregg" Lewis

Funeral services for Mr. Gregg Lewis will begin at 10:00 AM Friday, May 31, 2024, at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home chapel with Reverend Roy McNeill officiating. A private family interment will be held at the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Newton, MS. Robert Barham Family Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements.

Mr. Lewis, 66, of Meridian, died Monday, May 27, 2024, at his home surrounded by his family.

Gregg was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps earning the rank of Corporal upon his discharge. He served his fellow man in the City of Meridian beginning as a patrolman, graduated from the FBI National Academy, and earned the title of Chief in 1994; he held this rank until 2002. Following his retirement, he began his career in education where he taught U.S. History and then began in administration with Lauderdale County Schools. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Police, and The Freemason’s. Gregg was an avid reader and history buff; he held a deep knowledge and passion of American History. His joy was imparting knowledge and his love of history to his students and all who would listen. He was deeply devoted to his family; and was lovingly called “Pop” by his grandchildren.

Mr. Lewis is survived by his High School Sweetheart and wife of 43 years, Debbie Lewis; children, Jim Lewis (Aleda) and Leighann Lewis; grandchildren, Taylor Lewis and Cameron Furline; his brother, Jeff Lewis, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Gregg is preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Myrtle Lewis; and his infant brother, James Newton Lewis, II.

Pallbearers will be members of the Meridian Police Honor Guard. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jackie Rainer, John Kanagy, and Hugh Jordan.
