Mr. Smith, affectionately known as “JJ”, age 90, of Meridian passed away Monday July 4th, 2016 at Anderson Regional Medical Center after a lengthy battle with cancer.  He is now healed and overjoyed to be with our Savior above.  JJ never gave up, even through grueling treatments… always grateful for each day and never complaining.  We love him beyond words.

He retired from Atlas Roofing as superintendent after 40 years of service. He was a WWII Veteran of the United States Army.

He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years Helen Smith; children, Trisha Harper (Jimmy), Donna Hawkins, and Nita Thompson (Kevin) all of Meridian; grandchildren, Steve Harris, Jennifer Craft (Rick), Sha Harper, Sean Harris, Jim Harper (Jill) and Micah McKee; great-grandchildren, Kim Jordan, Matt Harris, Chris Harris, Emily Craft and Lauren Craft; great-great grandchild, Brayden Jordan; brothers, L.C. Smith (Dot), Bob Smith (Carolyn), and W.J. Smith (Rita); sisters, Norma Lee Riley, Polly Bowen, and Annette White (John); and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilborn and Helen Smith and sister, Eloise Irby.

Pallbearers will be Steve Harris, Sean Harris, Jim Harper, Micah McKee, Matt Harris and Chris Harris with honorary pallbearers, Rayford Temple and Bo Hurtt.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Voss and his staff at the Anderson Cancer Center and the nurses of Anderson Hospital 4 East for their dedicated care to JJ. The care that DeeDee and Peggy from Gentiva gave to him showed their compassion and love for our JJ.

The family would like for donations to be made to Fellowship Baptist Church Building Fund or the American Cancer Society.
