Graveside services for James “Mark” Mathews will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with Bro. Brent Manasco officiating. Robert Barham Family Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements.
Mark Mathews, 49, of Meridian, passed peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, September 25 at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama.
Mark was born June 12, 1970 in Butler, Alabama. He was a proud Eagle Scout and a graduate of Auburn University (“War Eagle!”). He served as a Captain in the Mississippi State Guard. He was long time employee of Walmart on Highway 19 in Meridian. General George S. Patton once said, “I don't measure a man's success by how high he climbs but how high he bounces when he hits bottom.” Mark was an overcomer; he faced numerous health issues throughout his life but always bounced back.
Mark is survived by his wife of 18 years, Donna Mathews; his parents, James and Barbara Mathews of Meridian; and his sister, Paula Jill Mathews of Peoria, Arizona; and numerous nieces and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Paul and Tennie Hensel of Butler, Alabama, and Charles and Katie Mathews of Wetumpka, Alabama.
Pall bearers will be friends and members of the Mississippi State Guard.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 27 at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be shared with the American Cancer Society or ACS’ Hope Lodge, 1104 Ireland Way, Birmingham, Alabama 35205.
