James Gilmer Mitchell, Sr.

Funeral services for Mr. James “Jimmie” Mitchell, Sr. will be held on Thursday, June 6, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Baptist Church, with Dr. Kevin Jones and Reverend Derrick Wilson officiating. Burial will be held at the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 12:00 p.m. (Address: 258 Honors Circle, Newton, MS 39345). Robert Barham Family Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

James “Jimmie” Gilmer Mitchell, Sr., age 86, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, June 2, 2019 at Anderson Regional Medical Center.

Jimmie joined the United States Marine Corps at an early age. He proudly served his country in the Korean Conflict and was one of the fortunate few to survive the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir Campaign. He also served two tours of duty in Vietnam. Mr. Mitchell retired from the United States Marine Corps after 21 years of honorable service.

Mr. Mitchell served as Director of United Blood Services for 10 years. He enjoyed his retirement with his wife of 67 years, Mary.

Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Cynthia Mitchell Harris (Leon); sons, James Gilmer Mitchell, Jr. (Elizabeth), Harvey Fred Mitchell (Valerie), Robert Brian Mitchell (Sherry); daughter, Terry Mitchell Sanford (Terrell); eleven grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends, especially his beloved niece, Pam Wooldridge.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Mitchell served faithfully as a deacon at Faith Baptist Church, and in lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Faith Baptist Church’s building fund.

Visitation for Mr. Mitchell will be held on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home.
