Mr. Remy, 86, of Meridian, died May 13, 2024, at Baptist Anderson Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
Mr. Remy was born in Apache OK August 18, 1937, to Willis Edward Remy and Jo Funderburg Remy. He grew up and went to school in the rural community of Broxton. His father and grandfather were killed in a car wreck when he was nine years old, the eldest of four children. John graduated from Broxton High School in 1955.
Because jobs were scarce after the Korean Conflict for those who didn’t have their military behind them, John and a classmate joined the Navy. As a Seabee, John was stationed on Guam and in Okinawa.
John and Margaret Sexton had met the week he graduated from high school, kept in touch, and were married four years later on June 12, 1959. To this union were born Colline Yvonne and Kevin Neil.
John’s first significant job was with the only carpet mill west of the Mississippi River, He was eventually Dyehouse Superintendent over four of Sequoyah’s Mills and active in Jaycees and The American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists. J.C. Penney hired him to match colors for their market display in Dallas.
When Meywebb Hosiery Mill wanted to expand, they heard of John’s expertise and hired him to move to Meridian MS and manage their dyehouse. When the mill closed, John worked for the City of Meridian in the Utility Billing Department until his retirement at age 70. In 1984, the Remy’s opened the first on-site photo lab in Meridian which Margaret managed for 40 years with John’s assistance after his retirement.
The Remy’s decided to build their home and lives on the truths in the Bible and were faithful in attendance and giving throughout their 65 years of marriage. He was ordained a deacon in 1968 and was a Merit Life Deacon at Highland Baptist Church. He served in the sound and TV ministries and was a choir member for many years.
