Joy Smith Oakes, our beloved "Mimi," passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, in Ridgeland, MS.
Born on July 20, 1935, in West, MS, Joy truly embodied her name. She brought happiness to everyone she met. Whether she was assisting brides at The Bridal Room, singing in the church choir, cooking for loved ones, or spending time with her family, Joy always had a radiant smile. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. She loved teaching children at church, attending Sunday school, singing in the choir, visiting and singing at nursing homes, and supporting widows. Her love for people shone through in all her actions. She will be deeply missed.
Joy is survived by her two daughters, Pam Rogers (Mark) and Missy McMullan (Mike); her grandchildren, Hunter Puckett, Courtney Joy McMullan, and Matthew McMullan (Gentry); her great-grandchildren, Graceley Thompson, Slade McMullan, and Finley McMullan; her sister, Betty Springer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Charles Sykes, William "Slick" Smith, and JD Oakes; her parents, Buddy and Lois Ellis; and her siblings, Bobby Ellis, Dixie Munday, Margie McFarland, and Sonny Ellis.
The family extends special thanks to her caretaker, Ora Adams, who became like family, her doctors, Dr. Sara Sanders and Dr. Lyssa Weatherly, and Accent Care Hospice for their compassionate care during her battle with dementia.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas offering or a charity of your choice.
