Kathleen S. Conaway

Kathleen Scruggs Conaway Kathleen Scruggs Conaway, of Toomsuba, passed away Tuesday, at age 83. She was born outside Tupelo, to Major and Eva Scruggs, the last of their eight children. Mrs. Conaway is remembered and cherished by her family for her sharp wit and her many surprising skills. She was a crack shot and a champion archer. She designed the assembly line for a garment factory, though she had no experience in that work. When Mississippi needed more registered nurses, she became one of the first women recruited. Mrs. Conaway cared for countless patients over many years in Mississippi hospitals, particularly in Jackson. Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Howard Conaway; her son, Richard Conaway; grandson, Brian Conaway; granddaughters Tarah and Laura Conaway, and five great-grandchildren. In keeping with Mrs. Conaway's wishes, there were no services.
