Lamar Harrison Carter Services for Lamar Harrison Carter will be held Friday, January 14, 2011 at 11:30 at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Paul McDonald and Reverend Mitchell McDonald officiating. Burial will be in Meridian Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Carter, 92, of Meridian, died Sunday, January 9, 2011 at his residence. Mr. Carter was born August 20, 1918 in Moselle, MS. He graduated from Moselle High School in 1938, Jones County Junior College in 1940 and received an Associate of Arts Degree from Meridian Jr. College in 1952. As a youth Mr. Carter worked on the farm and as a carpenter. In 1938 he operated a saw mill with his brother Ray. In 1939 Mr. Carter was a journeyman carpenter and helped build Camp Shelby, MS and Camp Claiborn, LA. 1941-1982 Mr. Carter worked at Mississippi Power Company in the Meter Department. Mr. Carter retired from Mississippi Power Company in 1982 as meter shop supervisor with 41 years of service. Mr. Carter received an Honorable Discharge in 1945 from the US Army where he served as Staff Sergeant. He was very active in the Boy Scouts of America serving as Cub Master, Boy Scout Master, and Explorer Advisor from 1950-1972. Mr. Carter led Choctaw Area Boy Scouts to Statewide Explorer Expeditions to Columbus SAC Base and Pensacola Navy Base, and to National Boy Scout Jamborees in Colorado Springs, CO, Valley Forge, PA and Faragut State Park, ID. Mr. Carter also led his Explorers to Philmont National Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Mr. Carter achieved Wood Badge Instructor in 1958, and was awarded a Scouter's Key, the Scouter's Award, and in 1962 was presented the coveted Silver Beaver Award from the Choctaw Area Council of Boy Scouts for his leadership and service to area Boy Scouts. Mr. Carter was also active in the Girl Scouts of the USA, serving as leader for his daughters' Senior Girl Scout Troop from 1966-1968. He also served as an adult volunteer for Ouachita Ramble, AR National Girl Scout Event in 1968. He was a Mason with King Soloman Lodge and Shriner with Hamasa Temple. Mr. Carter was a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for 65 years, American Bowling Congress, and Lakeview Golf Course, Senior Golf Association. Mr. Carter was a member of Fifth Street Methodist Church, 1950-2002. He was Chairman of Board of Trustees for 15 years until the church building was sold. Mr. Carter was a member of Druid Hills Methodist Church, 2002 to present. Mr. Carter was especially proud of his five children. They all received college degrees. Two sons became aerospace engineers, two daughters became teachers and one daughter became a registered surgical nurse. Survivors include his wife Agnes Bertha Copeland Carter; children, Sandra Joyce Carter Reaves, Thomas Lamar Carter and his wife Mary, Danny Bruce Carter and his wife Linda, Deborah Kay Carter Taylor and her husband Jimmy, Mary Ann Carter Ellis and her husband Michael; grandchildren, Greg Carter, Heath Carter, Robert Carter and his wife Laurie, Valerie Reaves Hodge and her husband Al, Kathy Carter and Jennifer, Chuck Reaves and his wife Nicci, Laura Taylor Isaacs, Jimmy Taylor, Jr. and his wife Christy, Erin Ellis Koons and her husband Kevin, Jason Taylor and his wife Amber, Angela Ellis Pace and her husband Mike, Shelley Carter, Ciara Carter; great grandchildren, Corey Rigdon, Seth Koons, Rachel Reaves, Blake Koons, Jenaleigh Ellis, Tanner Isaacs, Ella Carter, Meghan Reaves, Owen Hodge, Lauren Brogan, Sam Carter, Harley Pace, Jordan Hodge; sister, Helen Carter Hodge of Sumter, SC. He is preceded in death by his parents Royal Ray Carter and Laura Lula Hill Carter; brothers, Ray Lua Carter and William Durwood Carter; sister, Annie Lou Carter Bradley; granddaughter, Jennifer Ellis Rigdon. Pallbearers will be his Grandsons. In lieu of flowers and gifts the family request that all memorials be sent to The Choctaw Area Council of Boy Scouts or Druid Hills United Methodist Church.
