Larry E. Blakely, age 81, of Meridian, MS passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 15, 2023, in his home.
Born in 1941 in Dodge City, KS, he grew up with aspirations for the world and discovered his love of electronics, music, and travel while in the high school band. He served in the Army National Guard after finishing high school, following which he began to pursue his passions.
Larry’s long career in the recording industry began by opening his own recording studio in Dodge City, KS and then eventually moved to California to work with the Disney Corporation and Sunset Sound as an Audio Engineer. He was credited as the lead producer of the Jungle Book and Happy Birthday Winnie the Pooh albums, which were both certified Gold Records and nominated for the Grammy Award, and worked on many other albums throughout his career.
He moved to Meridian, MS in the early 80’s where he established roots in the community. He served in several capacities in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, including serving as Branch President in Laurel, MS. He was known to share his love of food, passion for music, and infectious sense of humor with anyone and everyone he met. His talents were appreciated by the community, especially Highland Baptist Church and “The Singing Christmas Tree” production. Many in the community regarded Larry not just as a good man but also as family and dear friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Lucille, and brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Mary.
He is survived by his two sons, James and Benjamin.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday August 26 at 2:00 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, at 5805 N Hill Street, Meridian, MS 39307.
