Memorial services for Mr. Leonard "Len" Stanley Maith will begin at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, January 28th, 2025 at Congregation Beth Israel synagogue. There will be a celebration of life to follow at Northwood Country Club in the Elk Lounge from 12:00-1:30. Robert Barham Family Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with arrangements.
Len Maith passed unexpectedly on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at Anderson Hospital. He was born in Bronx, New York, the son of Morris Maith and Evelyn Goldinger Maith.
Len graduated from Lakewood High School in 1950 and joined the Army Airborne Battalion in 1951 and became a paratrooper in the 187th Airborne Division. He then left the Army to attend Leland Powers College of Radio, Television and Theatre in Boston, MA. While at
Leland Powers, his claim to fame was in 1953 when he wrote a play entitled "The Sports Tragedy". After graduating Leland Powers, Len headed down south to Louisiana to take a radio DJ job in Bogalusa, Louisiana. After a stent in Louisiana, Len headed to Laurel, Mississippi where he was a DJ for WAML where in 1959 he set a World's record for continuous disc jockeying for 79 hours and 11 seconds. He then headed to Meridian, Mississippi, where he lived for the next 60 years.
Len, named "The Voice" held several radio, sales, management, and partner positions in local Meridian radio stations. However, his real passion was sports. He was a well-known sports broadcaster for local high schools and colleges calling games for football, basketball, baseball, and golf. He was a sports radio announcer at the Masters in Augusta for several years and was privileged to play the Masters course on several occasions. Len's life was always filled with the love of music and dancing, which led him to a second career of opening, running, and being a partner of The Spur country and western nightclub in the 1980's.
Along with holding several positions in local philanthropic clubs in Meridian, including President of Sertoma Club, President of the Mississippi Broadcasters Association, President of the ASAPH Lodge No. 286 B'nai Brith, Board Member of the Mississippi Speech and Hearing Association, President of the Meridian, Sales and Marketing Executives Association, President of Congregation Beth Israel, Len also brought T-Ball to Meridian youths.
Len was an avid golfer, winning many golf tournaments at Briarwood Country Club, Northwood Country Club, as well as other charity golf tournaments throughout the state. He was very active in Meridian Little Theatre, where he played several roles, mostly the ham, in many productions throughout the years. Len loved the Cowboys and spent many fun family times watching the Cowboys with Jack Daniels in hand.
Throughout the years, his career enabled him to meet and interview many celebrities, musicians, and famous sports figures. It filled him with great pride to be able to share his life stories and experiences.
Len is preceded in death by his parents, step mother, Pearl Maith, and his first wife Ollie D Maith. Len is survived by his wife of 30 years, Janis S. Maith, his daughter Debra Maith-Hozer and her husband, Mike Gahn, his son Rick Maith and his husband, George Ellis, his grandson Ryan Hozer and his wife, Amanda Hozer, and their daughter, Olivia, his grandson, Nathan Hozer and his wife, Evelyn Hozer.
