Mr. Lewis Lowry Sanders, 95, of Meridian, passed away peacefully at his home Sunday, May 31, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Lewis is remembered for his unwavering faith, his love of family, his dedication to sports, and the kindness and integrity that guided his life. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend.
He was retired from the Meridian Public School District, where he worked as a painter for many years. A lifelong sports enthusiast, Lewis played baseball while attending East Mississippi Community College in his native Kemper County and remained passionate about athletics throughout his life.
Known in Meridian for his dedication to community sports, Lewis umpired baseball and softball games for decades. His love for the game and commitment to fairness earned him the honor of being named Official of the Year in 2006 by the Mississippi High School Activities Association. Remarkably, he continued umpiring into his mid-eighties before finally hanging up his hat.
Outside of sports, Lewis was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed gardening, hunting, and fishing. Whether tending his garden, casting a line, or spending time in the woods, he found great joy in God’s creation and the simple pleasures of life.
A faithful member of Highland Baptist Church, Lewis cherished his church family and especially his Sunday School class. Over the years, those classmates became treasured friends, and he enjoyed their many gatherings, outings, and fellowship. At age 95, he had outlived many of those dear friends, and while his family grieves his absence, they find comfort in knowing he has been reunited in Heaven with his loved ones and longtime companions.
Lewis is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Jean A. Sanders; sons, Michael Sanders and Mark Sanders (Glenda); daughter, Mitzie Daniels (Rick); granddaughters, Alisha Robinson, Isabella Sanders, and Abigail Sanders; step-granddaughter, Kristin Ashurst (Joshua); great-grandson, Zane Robinson; step-grandsons, Jasper Ashurst and Henry Ashurst; a sister, Pat Key; a brother-in-law, Hurdle Henderson (Seleta); a sister-in-law, Mary Sanders; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Mattie Sanders; brothers, John Jackson Sanders, Walter Earl Sanders, Robert Curtis Sanders, Jimmy Sanders, and Mickey Sanders; and sisters, Mildred Cook, Frances Short, and Etta Lee Henderson.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers and staff of Accentcare Hospice; Dr. Muzaffar Rahat; and nurse, Corby Callahan, for the compassion, kindness, and support they provided to Lewis during his final days.
The Sanders family requests, in lieu of flowers, that memorial contributions be made to the charity of your choice in memory of Mr. Sanders.
