L'genia White Mitts, age 90, passed at home on historic Hilltop in Enterprise, MS, on July 18, 2014, after a 6 month illness. She was lovingly known to friends and family as "Pinkie", a nickname she received in high school. Pinkie was born April 3, 1924, in Americus, GA, to Henry Chandler White, Sr. and Violet Parsons White. She lived in Jacksonville, Florida, and later graduated from Miller High School in Macon, Georgia. Pinkie studied ballet, violin and classical piano in college. She attended Sullins Music Conservatory in Bristol, VA, Wesleyan College in Macon, GA, and graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in music. She married Fielden William Mitts, Jr. from Enterprise, MS, on October 6, 1946. After moving to Enterprise, she wrote for the Enterprise Record and Meridian Star newspapers. Later Pinkie became a public school music teacher at Clarkdale Elementary School, where she taught for more than 20 years and enthusiastically introduced her students to classical music, opera, and dance. Pinkie was also the glee club director for Clarkdale High School. Pinkie was the fun loving waterfront director at Girl Scout Camp Meridale in Lauderdale County for many years. She was passionate about Girl Scouting, serving as a troop leader for many years, and as a board member. Pinkie was an avid bridge player and belonged to bridge clubs in Meridian and Enterprise for over 50 years. She was the first president of the Clarke County Historical Society and was very active in the Enterprise Women's Club where she served as president. She was also president of the Meridian Heritage Club and a District Alumni Director for Phi Mu Fraternity. Pinkie was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Meridian, MS, where she was involved in various women's church groups and served as church organist. She touched so many people with her love of life, but she will probably be most remembered for her delicious "Pinkie's Pound Cake"! Pinkie loved the outdoors and animals. She especially enjoyed riding horses every Sunday with her family, attending the symphony with her family, and going to the beach with her family. Survivors include her four children: Joffrion Mitts of New Orleans, LA, Janie Mitts Moore of Houston, TX, Fielden William (Billy) Mitts, III and his wife Grace Watts Mitts of Meridian, MS, and Violet Chandler Mitts of Enterprise, MS; her seven grandchildren: Castlen Moore Kennedy and her husband Cory Garrett Kennedy and their son William Foster Kennedy of Houston, TX, Mittsi Moore Petersen and her husband Jeffrey Lamar Petersen of Denver, CO, Meier Moore Miller and her husband Mark Aaron Miller and their son Caleb Reid Miller of Dallas, TX, and Dee Moore Bowdon and her husband Robert Scott Bowdon of Houston, TX, Fielden William Mitts, IV of Meridian, MS, Thomas Kenneth Mitts of Jackson, MS, and Walton Todd Mitts of Jackson, MS. Pinkie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Fielden William (Billy) Mitts, Jr., her mother Violet Parsons White, her father Henry Chandler White, Sr., and her brother Dr. Henry Chandler White, Jr. Pinkie's long time friends include Mrs. N.D. Brookshire, Jr. and Mrs. Frank VanDevender, both of Meridian, MS. The Mitts Family would like to give a special thank you to Natasha McGraw and Mechelle Walker of Gentiva Home Health care for their love and support to Pinkie over the last few weeks. Visitation will be held at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home, 6300 Hwy. 39 North, Meridian, MS., 39305, Wednesday at 5:00 PM 7:00 PM. There will be a Rosary held at 6:30 PM. Services will be held at St. Patricks Catholic Church, 2601 Davis St., Meridian, MS., 39301 at 12 noon, Thursday, July 24, 2014. Interment will follow at Enterprise Historic Cemetery at 4:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be Pinkie's 3 grandsons and her 4 grand sons-in-law. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to your favorite charity or to Child Fund International (formerly known as Christian Children's Fund).
