Mrs. Broadhead, 86, of Meridian, passed away Thursday, November 10, 2016 at Diversicare of Meridian. A native of New Orleans’ Westbank, Lois grew up in a large family who was loyally dedicated to God, family and community. As a child, she learned to speak French, her mother’s native tongue, and along with her siblings, spoke that language in her home. Many people will remember her singing in French well into her latter years. Known to loved ones as Lois, Mama, Mom, Mimi, Grammy, Ms. Lois or Sister Lois, this special lady led a life of ministry and service. Until her health declined, she had a card ministry that was second to none. Always an immaculate housekeeper, the one thing that others might consider as clutter atop tables, countertops or in the corners of closets and rooms were boxes and boxes of sentiments for any occasion. Considered to be treasures to her and more importantly to the recipients, these cards were filled with scriptures, messages and always love and prayers before they were timely mailed or hand-delivered. Occasionally, a good joke would take a ride in a card or better yet would be told in person! Everyone loved Lois’s jokes. With her Cajun heritage, there was always a Bourdreaux and Thibodeaux tale to be told, or one of her favorites about God’s name being Andy which led into the course of the beloved hymn, In The Garden, where Andy walks with me and talks to me and tells me I am His own. When death began to yield to eternal life, Lois was sweetly told to go see Andy.
Lois Broadhead had some daily rituals that made for amusing conversations. She would start everyday by reading the obituaries in The Meridian Star, just checking to see if her name appeared and then she would tune into WMOX and listen to the funeral notices. If she didn’t see or hear her name, she would get on with the day! She loved to shop and would spend hours at the mall or speciality stores like Bonnie Jeans, The Peanut Gallery and Dollar General. To have heard husband Gene tell the story, she always took back more than she bought, and in taking back, more would come home. Lois loved to cook and her delicious foods and recipes have filled the homes of many over the years. To receive or to master the art of baking one of her egg custard pies made you feel as if you had arrived! More than any other ritual or tradition that this exceptional lady had was the ability to go to God’s Word for instruction, for solace and for peace that passeth all understanding. You would be hard-pressed to find anyone who knew and lived scripture more than Lois Broadhead. She was churched from birth and at the time of her death, she joyfully claimed that she was a charter member of Meridian’s Cathedral Assembly of God where she worshiped faithfully either in body or spirit. In addition, she worshiped often at Aldersgate and Diversicare where she had heart-talks with clergy and lay leaders who volunteered their time to share God’s Word with the residents.
