Funeral services for Mr. Lowery Rush Shumate will begin at 11:30 am Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home with Reverend David Hopkins officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Robert Barham Family Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements.
Mr. Shumate, 90, of Meridian passed away Friday, November 22, 2019 at Anderson Regional Medical Center of Meridian.
Mr. Rush was a member of Highland Baptist Church and was always known to have a deep and profound love for his family. He was the founder and a leader of “The Sitters Club” and was the owner of Shumate’s Service Station. Mr. Rush was always enjoying time with his friends creating different ways to enjoy their time at the station. He was affectionately known as “Papaw” by his grandchildren whom he loved and adored; he always enjoyed playing games, puzzles, and spending time together with them whenever possible; with his quick wit, jovial laugh, huge heart, and sense of humor, to know him was to love him.
Mr. Shumate is survived by his children, Pam Thompson (Mickey), and Gary Shumate (Stacy). Grandchildren, Jason Thompson, Stephanie White, Tori Rhodus (Chris), Justin Shumate, and Kayla Shumate. Great-grandchildren, Evan Rhodus, Cooper Rhodus, Gracie Rhodus, Morgan White, Joshua White, and Malcolm Shumate. Brother, Lee Shumate (Melba), as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Mr. Rush is preceded in death by his wife, Annie Shumate; parents, Joe and Ervine Shumate; brothers, Joe Mac Shumate, and Jim Shumate.
