Her Story
Maggie Lee Scarbrough Jemison was born on June 22, 1919 in Greene County, AL to the late Rufus and Annie Rice Scarbrough. As with the Prophet Jeremiah, the Lord knew the plans He had for Maggie–the Lord so planned that on August 3, 2019, Maggie would enter into Eternal Rest. Jesus said, “In my Father’s house there are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you”.
Maggie accepted Christ into her life at an early age. She was later baptized into Christ in the late 1940s at the Aliceville Church of Christ where her husband, Edgar Jemison served as the minister.
Maggie and Edgar were united in holy matrimony on October 14, 1930. Their union produced two children, Herbert and Madge. They moved from Aliceville, AL to Meridian, MS in 1954. Edgar Jemison served as the minister of the 17th Street Church of Christ. Maggie lived in Meridian for 36 years and considered it home. She moved to California in the early 1990s after her husband of 48 years, Edgar, passed away. She was a homemaker and raised her children and granddaughter, Jynnifer Walker. She was fondly referred to as “Madea”.
Maggie lived to witness the invention of television, man’s landing on the moon, computer technology, cellular telephones and more.
Maggie was known for her quilting, cooking, sewing, canning fruits, vegetables and making jellies and preserves. Her strawberry fig preserves and chow-chow-relish were the flavorful talk the town.
Maggie was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar, her parents Rufus and Annie Scarborough, her twelve brothers and sisters, and daughter-in-law, Eliza Jemison.
She leaves precious memories to her son, Herbert Jemison of Flint, MI, daughter Madge Mitchell (Wayne) of San Antonio, TX; daughter-in-law, Jessie Jemison of Queens, NY; grandchildren, Jynnifer Walker (Charles), Donald (Zina), Ronald (Deborah), Danny (Natalie), Jacqueline Mitchell Turner, Cedric, Andre, Timmy, Rena Hankins (Sean), Lori, Melissa Brown, and Erica; great-grandchildren, Jessica, Edris, Armand Young, Ashley Darrough, Courtney Devon, Jacqueline,Jonathan, Brianna Hankins, Tavyonna, Daniel, DeAndre Darrough, Timmy, Jr., Marquan Brown, Isaiah, Thomas Brown II, JaNiyah Brown, Emily, Courtney Alexis and Nicole; great-great-grandchildren, McKenzie Walk and Amaya Momoh; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
