Funeral services for Mark Steven (Steve) Thompson will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, February 1, at Prospect Presbyterian Church with Dr. Rhett Payne officiating with Robert Barham Family Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Burial will follow in the Prospect Presbyterian Church cemetery. Steve died peacefully Wednesday, January 23, at the age of 58 at his home in West Hollywood Hills, California. He attended Northeast High School and graduated from Jeff Davis High School. An outstanding athlete, Steve excelled in all sports. He was named Most Outstanding Defensive Football Player, won numerous track and field awards and was on the All State Basketball team while in high school. Steve was an expert horseman. He was a finalist in the National High School Rodeo competition in calf roping, and, at 15 years of age, he qualified to serve as a ringman at horse shows. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying all types of hunting. Steve also qualified for his pilot's license at the age of 17. As an editor and sales representative for the family owned magazine, The Southern Horseman, Steve travelled throughout the country. He also served on the Board of Directors for Southern Publishing Co. in Meridian until his retirement. Due to his lifelong love of sports, Steve was a die-hard football fan, especially of the Dallas Cowboys. He took that enthusiasm to California, where he made Dallas Cowboy fans of his son and grandchildren. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and everyone loved his laugh. He will be sorely missed. Steve is survived by his wife, Jeanette Mani Thompson, West Hollywood Hills, Calif.; his mother, Thelma Gunn Thompson, Meridian; his sisters, Jena Thompson Abrams, Tracy and Jim Bourgeois and Cindy Thompson Aucoin; his brother, Robert Thompson, all of Meridian; his stepchildren, Joey and Shiri Mani and Jacquie and Ygal Aiche of Beverly Hills, Calif.; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, four grandsons, three granddaughters and four great nieces. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold "Hal" F. Thompson. Pallbearers will be Kyle Temple, Richard Kinard, Mike Gunn, Kevin Gunn, Stacy Henderson and Aubrey Fulton; honorary pallbearers will be Robert Thompson, Cody Abrams and Austin Aucoin. Visitation will be held Thursday, January 31, from 5 7 p.m. at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home.
