Martha Charlene Calvert, 93, passed away on March 29, 2024, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. She was born in 1930 in Sebastopol, Mississippi, and later moved to Meridian for work after graduation in 1948. She met and married Billy Calvert in 1952 and saw him off to the Korean War when he was drafted. After he returned from the war, his variety store business took them to Mobile, Montgomery, Birmingham, and Brewton, AL, Sumter, SC, and finally home to Meridian. During these years, Mrs. Calvert faithfully served alongside her husband during their 62 years of marriage. Her love of old things was evident as she and Billy restored two beautiful old homes after retirement. Mrs. Calvert’s hobbies included playing the piano, genealogy, and beautiful tablescapes. Among her many spiritual gifts, hospitality, and teaching were predominant. She cherished her many years as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Charlene was a faithful member of Highland Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for over 30 years, and later joined Fellowship Baptist Church. She was passionate about sharing her faith and was a faithful prayer warrior. She believed in hiding the Word of God in her heart through scripture memorization and emphasized the impact of doing so during her last few years of life. Her faith became her sight fittingly on Good Friday as she was welcomed into her eternal home by the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Mrs. Calvert is survived by her son, Randy Calvert (Melanie) of Madison; as well as her grandchildren, Dr. Graham Calvert (Meredith) of Ridgeland, Dr. Justin Calvert of Fairhope, AL, Amy Campbell (Lane) of Vicksburg, and John Calvert (April) of Fairhope, AL; ten great-grandchildren; her nieces and nephews, Cynthia Post, Linda Munoz (Charlie), Charles Snodgrass (Judy), and Gary Post; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Samuel Calvert; son James Russell Calvert; father, C.E. Graham; mother, Mary Wolverton Graham; and her three sisters, Audine Snodgrass, Nola Luckett, and Lois Collins.
The family thanks the employees, staff, and residents of Ridgeland Place for their special care for her.
