Martha Elizabeth Ramsey Johnson

Graveside services for Martha Johnson will be held Thursday, September 3, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Magnolia Cemetery with Dr. Rhett G. Payne, III officiating. Robert Barham Family Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Johnson passed away at her home on Tuesday, September 1, 2015. Martha Johnson, born in Meridian, Mississippi in 1921, was the daughter of Sadie Wells Ramsey and William Milton Ramsey, Jr. A lifelong resident of Meridian, she was a graduate of Meridian High School and the first Meridian Junior College. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a Charter Member of DBS, the forerunner of the Dusty Social Service Club, a Lifetime member of the Meridian Junior Auxiliary and a member of many other clubs and organizations over her lifetime. In 1941, she married Reubon S. Johnson, Jr. and they enjoyed traveling extensively until his death in 1994. During World War II, she worked in the Quartermaster and Personal Affairs offices at Key Field and later as the Payroll Clerk at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. After the war, she worked for the Department of Agriculture in the Soil Conservation Service Office and in 1955 went into Real Estate with her mother. She will be remembered as a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a loyal friend to many who preceded her in death. She will be greatly missed by her family. She is survived by her only child, daughter, Beth McSweeney and her husband, Mike, granddaughters, Angela Ramsey Groner and her husband, Jack, of Mandeville, Louisiana and Leah Elizabeth Dennis of Birmingham, Alabama, great-grandchildren, Jack Ramsey Groner, Owen Dennis and Vivienne Groner. Niece and nephew, Cille Castle Horner of Jackson, Mississippi and R.M. Castle, Jr. (Bobby) of Austin, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben S. Johnson, Jr., her parents Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Ramsey, Jr. and her brother, W.M. Ramsey, III (Bill), brother and sister-in-law, R.M. and Eva Castle, and niece, Kay Castle Beard. Pallbearers will be Pete Gaston, Scott Hudson, J.W. Jones, Mark McPhail, Irby Lang and Jimmy Shelton. The family requests memorials be made to Frist Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 470, Meridian, Mississippi 39302. Thanks to all who helped in her care and allowed her to remain in her home and also to Hospice Care Group.
