Mrs. Hughes 88, of Meridian, passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2020 at Poplar Springs Nursing Center of Meridian.

Mrs. Hughes, a teacher by profession, received her BS Degree from LSU.  She excelled as a teacher as she was passionate about learning and sharing her knowledge with eager minded students.   Her method and motto consisted of “Make learning fun”.   Due to her quick wit and enthusiasm for life she easily accomplished this and taught many students in Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi.

After retiring from teaching Mrs. Hughes began another passion of renovating houses.  With the help of several of her talented brother in laws she acted as general contractor and enthusiastically restored many homes.  If she could not find the help she needed for a task she learned to do it herself.  Her resilient, determined to succeed spirit sustained her no matter what problem she faced.

When Mrs. Hughes hung up her hammer and paint brush she joined with her husband and son in operating Hughes Consultants and Engineering Company.   After retiring and closing the business Mrs. Hughes and her husband enjoyed many trips to Orange Beach and to Missouri.

Mrs. Hughes also had a passion for disabled Veterans.  She faithfully supported them for many, many years by monetary gifts and by her prayers.

The family would like to express special thanks to Poplar Springs Nursing Center for the kind and compassionate care given “Mrs. Marty” by the entire staff.

Mrs. Hughes will be deeply missed by all who loved her.

Mrs. Hughes is survived by her children Yerby L. Hughes, III, and Dottie Sharp. Grandchildren, Yerby L. Hughes IV, Vicki Morgan, as well as three great-grandchildren. Sisters, Mamie Webb, Clarice Smith (Jack), Rae Henderson (Parker), and Janie Mosley; brother-in-law, Jim Hughes (Patsy), as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
