"As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you." - Isaiah 66:13
Graveside services for Mrs. Mary Edna Goodin will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, with Rev. John Rush officiating. The family will receive guests from 1:00 until 1:45 p.m. at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home prior to the graveside services. Robert Barham Family Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements.
Mary Edna Whitenton Goodin ('Mimi' to her family) joined her beloved Homer in Heaven on July 13th. Passing peacefully in her sleep, she was 84 years old. She lived in Madison, Mississippi for the last 13 years, moving there with Homer to be closer to their daughters, Renee and Jane.
Mary Edna was born in Stonewall, Mississippi, where shortly thereafter her father was called to serve in World War II. She often reminisced fondly of her childhood adventures shared with sister Judy and cousins Kaye and Sandy. As a teenager, her family moved to Meridian, where she met her life-long friend, Sandra Flanagan Moore. She also became fast friends with Ann and Jean Goodin, who introduced 15-year-old Mary Edna to their brother, Homer, her future husband.
She married Homer on July 24th, 1960 at Oakland Heights Baptist Church in Meridian, shortly after graduating from Meridian High School in June of that year. She first worked as a salesperson at JC Penney and Sears, then as a receptionist and bookkeeper for Dr. Cecil Gaston. Later she found employment with People's Bank, which she said was her favorite job.
Mary Edna was a member of Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron for the Oakland Heights chapter of OES. She and Homer attended and were members of various Baptist and Methodist churches in the Meridian area, including Arrowood Baptist, Chunky Methodist, and Mount Vernon Baptist. Mary Edna was an extrovert who loved talking on the telephone and later keeping up with her friends and loved ones on Facebook, playing bridge, and solitaire, eating out at Olive Garden, watching "Wheel of Fortune" and bragging to anyone who would listen about the beauty and history of Meridian and the Great State of Mississippi.
Mary Edna is preceded in death by her husband, Homer Lewis Goodin, her parents Lamar Whitenton and Christine Cooper Whitenton, close friends Sandra Flanagan Moore, Louise Fulton, and Carleen Griffin, and parents-in-law Prentiss and Marie Goodin.
Mary Edna is survived by daughters Renee (John) Goodin Read, Jane Goodin Eaves, granddaughters: Amanda (Casey) Eaves Sharp, Erin Read, Rachell Eaves, Christine Eaves (Brent Chamblee), Hannah Read-McCoy (Megan); great-grandchildren, Grenleigh Eaves, Kenady Eaves, Eavey Sharp, Holdyn Johnson, Markey Jane Sharp, Ada Read Summerlin, Davie Ann Sharp, Korbyn Johnson, and Ruby Mae Johnson; sisters, Judy Lee and Threisa Robinson; special nieces, Tammy Hollis and Melissa Smith (Pike); and numerous other family members and friends.
Pallbearers will be John Read, Brent Chamblee, Casey Sharp, and Jeremiah Robinson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Holdyn Johnson and Korbyn Johnson.
"Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me..." - Psalm 23:4
"Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so I would have told you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am ye may be also" - John 14:1-3
