Katherine, age 95, was predeceased by her husband of 72 years, J.B. (Jesse Burrell) Tutor. She is survived by her three children Susan, Jesse, and Tom; five grandchildren Brooks Tutor, Sherida Vida, Dan, T.L. and Jesse Tutor; three great-grandchildren Layla Tutor, Savannah Tutor and Lion Vida.
Katherine was born August 28rd, 1920, in Friendship, MS, seventh child of Buster and Seola Windham. Her siblings, all deceased, included McKinley Windham, Mallie Gooch, Dewey Windham, Dollie Shettles, Clare Mae Sappington, and Jewel Windham. She was a childhood sweetheart of Burrell but also was close friends with his twin brother Brooks who died at the age of sixteen.
Katherine and Burrell were both good students, active in high school drama productions and school leaders. After high school, Katherine attended Blue Mountain Teachers College and returned home to teach in a one-room school house while Burrell attended Ole Miss. They married before he went off to serve in WW II. She traveled cross country by train with two-year-old Susan to be with J.B. before he deployed to the Pacific theater.
Katherine served as bookkeeper for Tutor’s Pharmacy in its early years, Sunday School teacher at Highland Baptist Church, member of the Meridian Garden Club, Literary Club, and was an avid social bridge player.
The family thanks Gloria Fortner and her team of care-givers for making it possible, with their compassion, professional personal care, humor, love, and attention, for both Katherine and J.B. to die at home.
A consummate homemaker, Katherine was a loving caring wife, and a consistent nurturing mother to her three children who will miss her dearly.
