Peggy Jean Byars Lamar
Peggy Jean Byars Lamar, 86, passed away on December 20, 2015 with her family by her side at her home in Meridian.
Services will be Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at 11am at First Baptist Church with visitation beforehand at 9:00 with Dr. Raymon Leake officiating.
Mrs. Lamar was born in Columbus, Mississippi on October 9, 1929 to the late Eddie Wood and Mary Burks Byars. She graduated from S.D. Lee High School in Columbus and received her Bachelor of Home Economics from Mississippi University for Women.
Mrs. Lamar and her husband, E. Howard Lamar, moved to Meridian in 1952 where she began teaching at Vimville High School. She continued to teach several years at both Center Hill and Marion Park until 1960 when they began their family.
Mrs. Lamar was active in community affairs and served as Board President of Lamar School Foundation and was on the board for MCC. During her lifetime she was a member of the LeFleui Garden Club, Questers Antique Club, and the Jr. Auxiliary of Meridian. She, along with her family, was very active and served in many areas at First Baptist Church. She was a member of the WMU, and she and Mr. Lamar taught a young Couples Sunday School Class for many years.
Mrs. Lamar’s goal in life was to be a Christian Wife, Mother, and Teacher.
Mrs. Lamar was preceded in death by her husband, E. Howard Lamar, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Byars, and her brother Eddie Burks Byars and is survived by her five children and nine grandchildren, Eddy Howard Lamar of Chicago, IL; Anne Lamar Haddox and her husband Keven Haddox of Rockwall, TX and their daughter Haley Haddox of Plano, TX; Camille Lamar Williams and her husband Mark Williams of McKinney, TX and their children Russell Howard Williams, Matthew Lamar Williams, Carrie Leigh Williams; Stephen Wood Lamar and his wife Kim Lamar of Gulf Breeze, FL and their children Jordan Byars Lamar, Trenton Wood Lamar; and R. Alan Lamar and his wife Lou Ann Lamar of Meridian and their children Ann Morgan Lamar, William Byars Lamar, and Logan Stuart Lamar; and one sister, Mavery Byars Elam of Nashville TN.
Pallbearers will be Jim Lauderdale, Leslie Dunn, Leonard Cobb, Gary Eldridge, Mark Wiggins, Dr. Woody Davis, and Ranny Cross.
Memorials may be made to Lamar School Building Fund, 544 Lindley Road, Meridian, MS 39305.
