Funeral services celebrating the life of Rev. James Monroe Thompson, Jr. will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home, with Bro. Chuck Sanders and Dr. John Lisenbe officiating. The family will receive guests from 10:00 until 10:45 a.m. prior to the funeral service. Robert Barham Family Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements.
Rev. Thompson, age 68, of Meridian passed away on April 27, 2026 at Marion Health and Rehab.
Monroe was born on October 19, 1957 in Meridian, Mississippi to James M. Thompson, Sr. and Joyce Bowen Thompson. He graduated from Meridian High School in 1975, and then he attended Christ For the Nations Institute in Dallas, Texas and Southern California College in Costa Mesa, California. He later earned his Master of Divinity at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Monroe served as the Assistant Pastor of Liberty Church in Meridian, Mississippi and later served as the Associate Pastor of Trinity Church in Arlington, Texas. He enjoyed singing, playing the guitar, and playing his vinyl records; he even published an original work - "Jesus I Love You"- with Maranatha Music. He was an avid reader, and especially enjoyed studying Biblical Hebrew and Christian Apologetics. He loved his family and friends and was instrumental in bringing many of them to The Lord.
Survivors include his son, James Monroe Thompson, III; mother, Joyce Thompson; Skye Thompson; sister, Dianne Kelley; special cousins, Bobby, Amy, Kyle, Ken, Andie, and Jennifer; and numerous other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Monroe Thompson, Sr; paternal grandparents, Clara and Ben Thompson; and maternal grandparents, James Alton and Josephine Cooper Bowen.
