Robert “Bob” W. Walker
Funeral services for Bob Walker will be held Thursday, March 17, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Poplar Springs Drive United Methodist Church with Reverend Chuck Meador officiating. Burial will follow at Magnolia Cemetery with Robert Barham Family Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Walker, age 90, a native of Meridian, passed away Monday, March 14, 2016 at Anderson Regional Medical Center.
Bob was a proud graduate of Meridian High School and Millsaps College. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps serving during WWII. He retired after over 30 years of loyal service to Delta Air Lines, after which he worked for Corrigan Travel Agency. Bob was a longtime member of Poplar Springs Drive United Methodist Church where he was very active teaching Sunday School and singing in the choir for 55 years. The church honored him by naming the choir room after him. Bob enjoyed singing with the Meridian Community Chorus, Symphony Chorus, and the Barbershop Group, as well as participating in numerous Meridian Little Theatre productions. In addition to his love of history, travel, and family, Bob was an avid Mississippi State Bulldog and Meridian Wildcat fan.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Barbara Atkinson Walker; daughter, Ginny Walker Shurlds (Henry); grandchildren, Robert Walker Shurlds and Abbey Shurlds; sisters-in-law, Emma Atkinson and Clara Lynn Atkinson Morgan; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Curtis Spencer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Berry Emmett and Sarah Vail Walker and a brother, B.E. Walker.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Sims, Benny Eggler, Harry Mayer, Billy Anders, Arthur “Red” Stewart, Otha Barham, Cary Vaughn, and Ron St. John.
Honorary pallbearers will be his Sunday School class, the St. Andrews Class.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Bob and Barbara Walker Endowment Scholarship at Meridian Community College, c/o MCC Foundation, 910 Highway 19 North, Meridian, MS 39307 or the Poplar Springs Drive United Methodist Church choir fund, P.O. Box 3333, Meridian, MS 39303.
