Robert E. Maxey

d. June 21, 2017

Services for Robert Maxey will be held Saturday, June 24, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home, with Brother Davey Wilkinson officiating. Burial will follow at Logino Community Cemetery in Philadelphia.

Mr. Maxey, age 73, of Meridian, passed away June 21 at Neshoba General Hospital.

Born in Louisville, the son of H.B. and Bessie Lee Creekmore Maxey, Robert was raised in Noxapater, Mississippi. Due to having multiple health complications during his infancy, he lost his hearing. Mr. Maxey was a resident of the Mississippi School for the Deaf (MSD) from the early age of 4 until he graduated in 1964.  During his years at MSD, he excelled in playing as a lineman on the football team, as well as participating in their basketball team as a forward. He was well known within the deaf community and had been a member in the Mississippi Association for the Deaf (MAD), where he and his wife enjoyed many social gatherings.

There are many stories of his early childhood regarding his love for animals and his uncanny ability with them.  One of his brothers, Danny Maxey, recalled a time when he disappeared during the night only to be found in the stables asleep on a horse. Other siblings have recalled comical stories that involved anything from having pet hens to training horses to escape from the barn area. This love of animals stayed with him throughout his life.

He met his wife, Debbie, in Jackson, Mississippi and they married in Noxapater on April 4th, 1969. Shortly thereafter he took a job as a printer’s assistant in the north industrial park located in Meridian, MS.

He is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Deborah C. Taylor Maxey; children, Angela White and husband, Eddie, and John Maxey; grandchildren, Luke Mathis, Emily Mathis, Jody Maxey, and Josh White; siblings, Bud Maxey, Joan Nance, Danny Maxey, and Jean Thomas; numerous nieces and nephews.
