Roy Michael "Mike" Cumberland

A Memorial Service for Roy Michael Cumberland of Lauderdale, MS will take place at 3 p.m., Sunday, June 23, 2019 at the Meridian Church of Christ. Mike was born on March 12, 1958, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to Roy Clellon and Peggy Jean Watkins Cumberland. He attended Northeast Lauderdale Schools where he played football and baseball. He met his future bride, Sonja Renée Hall during their senior year, and married following graduation, on October 1, 1976. During the next 30 years Mike drove for various trucking companies, both as an employee, and as an owner-operator. Mike saw a great deal of the lower 48 states, as well as parts of Canada. He had many stories to relay to family, friends, and other truckers. Due to health issues in the last few years, Mike had to leave the road to the younger set. Some of his trucking buddies would call him for directions for loading, unloading, places to eat, and places to avoid. Mike was a huge Alabama football fan - Roll Tide! He could tell you most anything you wanted to know about the Tide’s stats, from coaches to team members. Mike was a member of the Meridian Church of Christ in Meridian, MS, where he enjoyed talking about anything anyone wanted to discuss. He will be remembered fondly for his compassionate and sincere prayers, as well as his sitting on the bench at the entrance to the foyer, greeting and visiting with members and visitors alike.

Mike leaves behind a devoted wife of nearly 43 years, Sonja Renée Hall Cumberland; two daughters, Ashley Brooke Johnson, Lauderdale, and Ana Lisa Cumberland, Marietta, GA; grandchildren, Olivia Nichole Johnson and Bentley Cole Swain; brother, Gary Cumberland (Kaye), Flora, MS; sister, Beverly Cumberland Huffman (Mike), Walnut Springs, TX; sister-in-law, Tabitha Hall Burnham (Von), Jennings, FL; many special aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews,  friends, former trucking buddies, and especially his family at the Meridian Church of Christ.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Roy Clellon Cumberland and Peggy Jean Watkins Cumberland; brothers, Tony Keith Cumberland; Reggie Daniels Cumberland and Roy Donald Cumberland; nephew, Justin Steven Cumberland; father– and mother-in-law, William Arthur and Sonja Faye Roberson Hall; and sister-in-law, Rachel Elizabeth Hall Law.

The family expresses appreciation for many years of care for Mike to the medical staffs of Rush Hospital and Jeff Anderson Hospital and their affiliated clinics, as well as other medical facilities around Meridian.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Pine Vale Children’s Home, 1872 County Road 700, Corinth, MS 38834.

Visitation will take place from 2 until 3.
