Suzanne "Suzie" McWilliams Pool was born on April 25, 1953 in Meridian, Mississippi and died March 27, 2025. She graduated from Meridian High School in 1971 and earned her degree from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi in 1975.
Suzie was a lifelong adventurer, always up for a trip anywhere with her friends and family. She hiked, biked, rafted and rappelled across the United States. She completed over two-thirds of the Appalachian Trial and part of the Pacific Coast Trail, biked across Mississippi, and participated in an advanced adventuring tour in Alaska. On most of these expeditions, Suzie was the oldest participant by many years.
Her energy and spirit of adventure shone through in everything she did for her community. Always ready to lend a hand - whether organizing, teaching, or volunteering - she founded the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) at Poplar Springs Elementary, Northwest Junior High, and Meridian High School. At Poplar Springs, she was affectionately known as "Mother Earth" for starting a recycling program. Suzie was also an active member of the Junior Auxiliary of Meridian and volunteered with Friends of Bonita Lakes. She participated in the Lit Witts reading group and played regular bunco games with friends. Suzie worked at various local businesses, including multiple tenures at 5th Street Deli and Southern Gardens Outfitters. She was a certified local yoga instructor and could often be found walking with her sisters. Most recently, her lifelong passion for tennis evolved into a love for pickleball, and she could often be found on the courts at Northwood.
As an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Suzie served on the vestry twice and completed the Education for Ministry (EFM) graduate program. She also spent many summers as a Cabin Mother at Camp Bratton Green, where she served on the board. Twice, she traveled to Honduras on medical missions.
Suzie was preceded in death by her parents, T.E. "Shorty" McWilliams and Gloria Weidmann McWilliams, of Meridian, Mississippi. She is survived by her beloved husband of nearly fifty years, Randy; her son, Keeton (Ashley); her daughter, Whitney Mitts (Fielden); her two granddaughters, Mary Beth and Terra; and the McWilliams sisters, Gloria, Missy, and Dottie. Remember, "four to a pack."
To know Suzie was to know that her spirit of adventure and compassion for others were among her greatest qualities. Her friends describe her as the strongest, kindest, most accepting, and non-judgmental friend. She is treasured by all and will be deeply missed. A Celebration of Life will be held in the Parish Hall at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Friday, April 4, 2025 from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests sharing memorial contributions with the charity of your choice. Robert Barham Family Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with arrangements.
