Victor W. Simmons Services for Victor W. Simmons will be held Friday, June 28, 2013, at 11:00a.m. at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Raymon Leake and Reverend David McCubbin officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Mr. Simmons, 91, of Gulfport, Mississippi and formally of Meridian died Wednesday, June 26, 2013, in Gulfport. Mr. Simmons graduated from Dixie High School and Meridian Junior College. He was self-employed as an auto body mechanic with Simmons Wrecker Service. He was an Allied Trades Instructor from 1969 until 1986. Mr. Simmons was an active member of First Baptist Church in Meridian. He was a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and was a part of the Men's Monday Night Church Visitation Group. Mr. Simmons was a Mason and worked with Habitat for Humanity. He enjoyed puttering around the house with various projects. Mr. Simmons served in the Navy from 1942 until 1946 and served in World War II. He received awards for, American Area, Philippine Liberation, nine stars for the Asiatic Pacific and also for Good Conduct. Survivors include his daughters, Jan Cameron and her husband Drew of Long Beach, Mississippi and Joyce Root and her husband John of Tega Cay, South Carolina; grandchildren, Brent Cameron and his wife Cindy of Gulfport, Mississippi, Scott Cameron of Long Beach, Mississippi, Derek Cameron of Birmingham, Alabama, Regan Hand and her husband Jon of Lexington, South Carolina and John David Root and his wife Savannah of Charleston, South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Hughes Simmons; parents, Green Berry and Evie Simmons; sister, Mable Robertson; brothers, G.B. Simmons, Roger Simmons, Ray Simmons and Claude Simmons. The family requests memorials be made to First Baptist Church of Meridian, General Fund and to Habitat for Humanity. Pallbearers will be members of his family.
