Virginia Davis McGinnis, 93, passed away peacefully at home on February 18, 2024. The only child of Ike and Bert Davis, she was born July 6, 1930 and was a lifelong resident of Meridian. She graduated from Meridian High School and attended the University of Mississippi, pledging Kappa Kappa Gamma. Virginia married James E. McGinnis, Jr. on August 9, 1952, and their romance continued for 64 years until his death in January of 2016. Her purpose in life was to be a loving and devoted wife, and to raise (with love and discipline) her three children to be well-adjusted, productive adults. She cherished her role as "Mimi" to her six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Ever the gracious Southern lady, Virginia was known for her beautiful home and landscaped yard, where she loved to entertain family and friends on holidays and special occasions. Over the years, she enjoyed involvement with many community organizations such as Junior Auxiliary, Meridian Little Theater, Questers and others. James and Virginia were lifetime members of First Baptist Church, and in later years as health issues made attending services difficult or impossible, they faithfully continued worship via televised services.
Virginia treasured many years of travel with James (she always called him "J.E") on both business and pleasure trips. Together they established dozens of lasting friendships, especially while attending meetings during James' decades of participation and leadership in the North American Wholesale Lumber Association. Virginia especially valued her Meridian friends, many of which began in her childhood, and she always appreciated their love and support. Lunches and dinners with those "girlfriends" always gave her great joy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and sister-in-law Louise Flood.
She is survived by her children: Gina Long (Hank) and Carol Alexander (Rex) of Birmingham, AL, and Jim McGinnis (Cindy) of Meridian. Also, grandchildren Henry Long, Virginia Long, Tommy Kitsmiller (all of Birmingham), Menton M. Deweese (Matthew) of Nashville, TN, Davis McGinnis (Karli) of Meridian, and Caroline Gibson (Jeffrey) of Waxahachie, TX; great-grandchildren Hank Long, Ella Gray Deweese, Adeline Deweese, Parks McGinnis, and Anne Harvey McGinnis. She is also survived by brother-in-law Larry Flood (Sheryl) of Meridian, niece Melissa F. Neyland (Nash) of Jackson, MS and nephew Lloyd Flood (Susan) of Atlanta, GA.
