Walter Watlington Eppes, Jr. Services for Walter Watlington Eppes, Jr., will be held on Friday, June 27, 2014, at 1:00p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church with Reverend Mark Flynn and Dr. Rhett Payne officiating. Burial will follow at Magnolia Cemetery with Robert Barham Family Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Eppes died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family He was eighty-four years old. He had been an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and served as a trustee. He was an avid University of Alabama sports fan, and he enjoyed hunting. Attorney Eppes was a life-long resident of Meridian, Mississippi having been born in Meridian on October 9, 1929. He was the only child of Mary Ella Seymour Eppes and Walter Watlington Eppes, Sr. Mr. Eppes attended Meridian Public Schools and upon graduation from Meridian High School he entered the University of Alabama for his undergraduate studies. While a student at the University of Alabama he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. Prior to his graduation, he was granted an early admission to the University of Mississippi Law School. While in attendance there he was a member and officer of Phi Alpha Delta Legal Fraternity. He was also an active member of the Moot Court Board. In 1952, he received a Juris Doctor degree including a license to practice law. He returned to Meridian and married the former Katherine Bailey. In 1955, he entered into private practice in Meridian, and continued his practice for fifty years. During his private practice he was elected President of the Lauderdale County Bar Association. He served on numerous committees of the Mississippi Bar Association and was elected to serve as President of the Mississippi Bar in 1985. He was a member of the American Board of Trial Lawyers, Fellow of the Mississippi Bar and American Bar Association. He received admission into the Fifth and Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, as well as admission to the Bar of the United States Supreme Court. He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Katherine Bailey Eppes; two daughters, Kathy Eppes Yarborough of Oxford and Susan Eppes Whitehead and husband, Jimmy of Meridian; four grandchildren, Katie Naron and husband, David of Oxford, Walter Whitehead and wife, Shelley Whitehead of Meridian, Daniel Whitehead of Meridian and John Yarborough of Columbia, and one great-grandson, Rhett Whitehead.
