William Alvis (Al) Veach, 84, died on Saturday, October 22, 2016. Throughout his life in Meridian, he practiced veterinary medicine at Veach Veterinary Clinic and retired in 1990.

Services will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. and the body is at rest at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home. Services will be conducted by The Reverend J. Brian Ponder at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and Ben Spears with North Park Church. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. Interment will be at Magnolia Cemetery immediately following the service. Pallbearers will be John Payne, Blake Taylor, Monroe Thompson, Jeffrey Duckworth, Michael Payne, and Kenny Taylor. Honorary Pallbearers will be Lamar Gidden, Dan Self, Paul McCarthy, Olen Cowart, Clay Ware, and Bob Renfroe.

Dr. Veach was born on December 4, 1931. He was educated in the Selma, Alabama Public School Systems and graduated from the Albert G. Parrish High School. He studied veterinary medicine at Auburn University for 6 years and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order Fraternity. He later served in the U.S. Air Force as a major from 1957 to 1959. He practiced in Meridian, Mississippi from 1959 to 1990. Al founded the Meridian Veterinarian Association and served as its first president and performed volunteer work at Meridian City Dog Pound. He was active in the Meridian Masonic Order reaching his 33rd Degree and served as a Shriner. He was active in hunting and fishing most of his life and also golfing at Northwood Country Club where he was a member. He was also a member of the Meridian Little Theatre.

He married Norma Huggins from Meridian, Mississippi and they had sixty wonderful years together. They have five children, Skye Adel, Chele Ann, Laice Alyss, Shawn Auburn and Winston Alvis, all surviving. Also surviving is his sister, June Newton from Corpus Christi, Texas. Surviving grandchildren are Monroe Thompson, Brittany Duckworth, Michael Payne, Casey and Blake Taylor, Alex, Abby and Ashlynn Veach. Surviving great grandchildren are Hayden and Caleb Duckworth, Parker Robinson and Kinsley Taylor.

Preceded in death are his parents, Gladys Madolyn Veach and Cecil Adel Veach along with his sister Gwendolyn Veach McWhorter.

Special music will be performed by Abby Veach.
