Norman Burnette McKenzie Jr. Funeral services for Norman B. McKenzie Jr. will be held Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Briggs Chapel Church with Reverend Nick Holden officiating. Burial will be at Briggs Chapel Church Cemetery with Robert Barham Family Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Mr. McKenzie, age 83, of Porterville, passed away Sunday, April 19, 2015 at Regency Hospital. Mr. McKenzie was born on June 6, 1931 in Jackson, Tennessee. He attended Murray State University where he played football. He left Murray State to join the United States Air Force where he served in the Korean War. After his service, he went back to college and completed his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Mississippi. Later he completed his Masters of Education at the University of Mississippi. Mr. McKenzie spent numerous years in public and private school education. He began his career in Holly Springs, Mississippi and then taught at several schools in Arkansas and Mississippi before retiring at Scott Central in Forest, Mississippi. Between 1978 - 1986, he was Headmaster at Kemper Academy in DeKalb, Mississippi. After retirement, he worked at Ponta Creek Golf Course and the Sonny Montgomery Fitness Center at NAS Meridian. He was a member of the Mississippi Private School Association Academy Activities Commission where he served as Vice President and President. He was inducted into the Mississippi Private School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2004. He was an active member of Briggs Chapel Church where he served on the Board of Trustees and served as Lay Leader. He is survived by his daughters, Carolyn Davis McKenzie and Janet Briggs and husband, Greg; grandchild, Brandon Briggs and wife, Sera Beth; sister, Kay Kight; brother, Danny McKenzie and wife, Lee; sister-in-law, Beth Davis Curtis and husband, Mallory; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Davis McKenzie; parents, Norman Burnette McKenzie Sr. and Kathleen Givens McKenzie; sisters, Alice McKenzie Aufdenberg and Carolyn McKenzie; brothers-in-law, Gene Aufdenberg and Rodney Kight; and sister-in-law, Martha Davis Sickman. Pallbearers will be J.L. White, David Sorrells, Bill Brace, Marcus Hunnicutt, Eddie Sciple, Jay Miller, Willie Frazier, and James Jones. The family request memorials be made to Briggs Chapel Church.
